Jimmy Stewart was an American actor who became famous for his roles on television shows and movies during a career that spanned 1935 to 1991. He portrayed the “American ideal” with his distinctive drawl and everyman persona. He was just so down-to-earth and relatable, and he even had a break early on in his career to enlist in the United States Army to fight in World War II from 1941-1947. Jimmy returned from the war and back into the acting scene with a bang with the classic “It’s a Wonderful Life.”

Later in his career in 1984, he would join a list of actors and comedians for a pair of television specials co-produced by Dick Clark and broadcast on ABC titled The Funniest Joke I Ever Heard. The idea was self-explanatory; Celebrities would tell their favorite joke on camera. The first episode aired on May 21, 1984, and featured the Kermit and Miss Piggy, and the next, without Muppets, on November 27, 1984. The list of celebrities not only featured Jimmy Stewart but Cyndi Lauper, Jack Lemmon, William Shatner, Martin Sheen, George Burns, and Victor Borge.

In the video below, Jimmy Stewart does what he does best using his matter-of-fact, deadpan delivery to tell his favorite joke. The joke is about a wife who asks her husband if he would ever remarry if she were to pass away. The question throws the man off as they’re just trying to enjoy themselves at breakfast on a fine morning. But she asks him again later on…

And she wouldn’t let it go over the next three days, no matter how much the husband avoided the question. The man finally gives in and says that yeah, he probably would marry again. “Would you sell the house?” she asks. “No,” he responds. “Would you sell our bed?” A bit perplexed, the man replies, “No, I don’t see any reason why, No I wouldn’t sell the bed.”

“Well, you certainly wouldn’t let her touch my golf clubs…”

The husband answers this one a little too quickly and too confidently… 😛

Too funny! And of course Jimmy Stewart tells it the way only Jimmy Stewart could tell it. A must see!
